And of course it also has a reputation as a destination with a seemingly endless supply of things to do.

You can learn lots more about Queenstown right here.

Some tips about where to stay in Queenstown?

Queenstown hugs the shores of Lake Wakatipu, and in parts, is very hilly.

Now this is great if you like panoramic views of the lake and mountains (and who wouldn't).

But if you are heading home after a night out exploring Queenstown's restaurants, bars and shops, a steep uphill walk back to your motel might not be so much fun.

The other issue in Queenstown is parking. Particularly during the busier periods of summer (Dec-Feb), and the ski season (June-Sept), parking in and around the town center is often hard to find, and when you do, it will probably be pay as you use. There is very little free parking in the central Queenstown shopping area.

For these reasons, we highly recommend finding accommodation within a short (and preferably level) walk of the town center. You will appreciate not having to get the car out every time you want to head into central Queenstown.

Or, as an alternative, choose accommodation that is on the local bus route.

Connectabus is Queenstown's local bus service. You can check their timetables and travel routes here.

The four main accommodation districts in Queenstown

Accommodation here generally sits in one of four locations.......central Queenstown, the Frankton Road area, Fernhill and the airport area.

Frankton Road Accommodation

Frankton Rd is the main road into Queenstown and runs from Frankton (where the airport is) to central Queenstown, a distance of about 7 kilometers. As you can see on the map, the airport sits at the far right (Eastern end) and central Queenstown is left of center.

There's lots of quality accommodation on the Frankton Rd, but if you want to be able to walk to town, then we recommend only those motels on the town center (Western) end of Frankton Rd.

Fernhill Accommodation

Fernhill has the same distance issues as Frankton (it's located on the far left side of the map). And the final kilometer or so into Fernhill is up a very steep hill. It's ok walking to town, but coming back, not so much fun!

So if walking is a problem, then Fernhill accommodation may not be for you.

Keep in mind though that some of the motels may operate a shuttle service to town, and there is a local bus service also.

Airport Accommodation

There's a few new large chain hotels in the airport area and if you want to base yourself there, no problems. The Frankton area has a large shopping mall, and of course access to the airport is excellent.

And if you are coming here to ski The Remarkables, accommodation near the airport is the closest to The Remarkables ski field.

Shuttles and the local bus service are available, but remember, it's a seven or eight kilometer walk along the lake front to the town center.

This is not your typical backpacker hostel.

Recent improvements have made this a bit of an eye opener, and everything presents as "new".

You can choose dorm style accommodation, or private rooms.

Don't be put off by "dorm style" as the beds at Haka are more like a self contained pod, with your own power, lockable storage compartment, lighting, privacy screen and motel quality mattress and bedding.

The private rooms have flat screen TVs, and are really nicely furnished.

Our best Mid Range motels in Queenstown

Pepper's Beacon Queenstown

Location: 34 Lake Esplanade Queenstown (see map)

Pepper's Beacon is one of our favorite places to stay in Queenstown. They have a range of room styles, with everything from studios to large apartments and suites.

The location is hard to beat. Lakefront, and around four minutes flat walk to the center of town. No need to get the car out when you stay here.

We recommend a lake view room and can highly recommend the lake view apartments which have everything for a long term stay including full kitchens and laundry facilities. And the views are breathtaking.

The large balconies are a welcome bonus as are gas fires and heated floors.

Our only real gripe was that at the time of writing, you had to pay for Wifi.

Tip: Be sure to ask for a lake view as some apartments face the internal courtyard.

Hotel St Moritz

Location: 10-18 Brunswick Street Queenstown (see map)

Like Pepper's Beacon, the Hotel St Moritz is a three or four minute walk to town.

There is a hill to negotiate from the lakefront up to the hotel and it is quite steep for around 100 meters or so.

There are a range of room types available, an on site restaurant and bar with wonderful lake views, a fitness center, and a hot tub.

Rooms all feature flat screen TVs with satellite TV, and ipod docks.

It's a great location and well worth a look if you want somewhere nice and close to town.

Our only complaint would be that the balconies are very small and don't really allow you to enjoy those amazing views.

Apart from that, the Hotel St Moritz Queenstown is a great place to stay.
